starting up one Post-it at a time.
It all began with a stack of Post-it® notes and ideas fueled by passionate people. Women SPEAK was fostered in a small coffee shop nestled in Glendora, California by four college students.
The colorful display of Post-it® notes against the stark white wall would later be the pillars of Women SPEAK: building positive body image, deconstructing gender media stereotypes, establishing healthy relationships, and being leaders of change in the community.
That is all it took: Post-it® notes and enthusiasm. But what really propelled the organization was technology and media. Expanding Women SPEAK's outreach and network beyond the greater Los Angeles area, the organization was able to reach a vast array of people with proficiency and speed. Webcamming, posting videos, photos, tweets, and statuses made communicating easier than ever. Moreover, social media sites have made collecting and analyzing data almost effortless by doing it for you.
As Co-founder and Director of Communications for Women SPEAK, I was inspired by how necessary the media was and still is for the advancement of the organization. As mentioned before, this non-profit was made by college students. Media has made it accessible for people, regardless of age or professional background, to organize and create a growing non-profit organization. Project SPEAK will showcase how Women SPEAK is managed and developed in the Internet world. Furthermore, Project SPEAK will present what has been successful and not-so-successful in terms of media outreach.
How will your voice be heard?
It's time to SPEAK. #ProjectSPEAK
